Couples Therapy in St. Albert and Edmonton

Relationships are one of the most important parts of our lives—and often one of the most complex. Couples therapy is supportive, non-judgmental space for partners to understand each other more deeply, rebuild trust, and create healthier patterns of connection.

Whether you’re experiencing ongoing conflict, feeling distant, navigating communication breakdowns, or rebuilding after a breach of trust, professional relationship counselling can help you reconnect and strengthen your partnership.

Our therapist offers Couples Therapy using a number of different strategies and tools outlined below. Tammy will also pull in a number of other treatment modalities using her clinical judgment. Couples can chose to have both Tammy and Jason support them in their couples session.

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT)

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) is an evidence-based approach developed by Dr. Sue Johnson that focuses on adult attachment and emotional bonding. Instead of just treating surface-level communication issues, it helps partners identify negative interaction cycles, uncover deeper vulnerabilities, and rebuild a secure, trusting connection.

Why EFCT Works

EFCT is built on the concept that a secure emotional attachment is a fundamental human need. When that security is threatened, couples often fall into destructive patterns (like the "pursuer-distancer" or "criticize-defend" cycles). Instead of treating the argument as the problem,

EFCT helps partners:

  • Identify the Cycle: Recognize the specific, repetitive negative patterns that trigger emotional distance.

  • Access Hidden Emotions: Uncover the primary emotions beneath the surface (such as fear of abandonment, loneliness, or shame) rather than reacting with anger.

  • Create New Bonds: Communicate vulnerabilities in a way that allows the other partner to respond with empathy and reassurance, fostering a "Hold Me Tight" dynamic.

Relational Life Therapy

Relational Life Therapy (RLT) is a direct, active form of couples therapy created by psychotherapist Terry Real. It moves beyond traditional communication training by focusing on emotional accountability, changing deeply ingrained patterns, and shifting from toxic power struggles to authentic, collaborative connection.

Key Principles of RLT

  • No "Blank Screen": Therapists do not remain entirely neutral. They actively intervene, point out destructive dynamics, and model healthy behaviors in real time.

  • Moving from Blame to Accountability: Instead of framing an issue as 50/50, RLT focuses on the negative pattern itself and how each partner contributes to it.

  • Reining in Extremes: It challenges relationship behaviors related to grandiosity and inferiority.

  • Addressing the "Adaptive Child": The therapy examines how early childhood experiences form protective, defensive reactions, and helps partners transition to functioning from their "wise adult".
