Understanding How Relationships Shape Who We Become

Our earliest relationships can influence how we understand ourselves, other people and the world around us.

The ways we experienced connection, safety, comfort and responsiveness growing up can shape how we navigate relationships as adults. Sometimes these patterns continue to affect us long after childhood, influencing how we respond to conflict, closeness, rejection, trust and emotional needs.

Attachment-based therapy helps us understand these patterns with curiosity and compassion rather than judgment.

At Guided Path Counselling, attachment is considered within the context of your relationships, experiences and life circumstances. The goal is not to blame your past, but to understand how it may be influencing your present.

What Is Attachment-Based Therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is an approach that explores how our early relationships and experiences can influence the way we connect with others and regulate our emotions.

Attachment patterns can affect how we:

  • form and maintain relationships

  • respond to conflict

  • ask for help

  • express our needs

  • experience intimacy and vulnerability

  • respond to rejection or abandonment

  • manage difficult emotions

  • trust ourselves and others

  • understand our own worth

These patterns are not fixed. With greater awareness, supportive relationships and therapeutic work, it is possible to develop new ways of relating.

When Attachment Patterns Affect Adult Life

You may notice that you repeatedly experience similar difficulties in your relationships.

Perhaps you become anxious when someone pulls away. Maybe you find it difficult to trust people, depend on others or let someone get close. You may avoid conflict, shut down during difficult conversations or feel responsible for keeping everyone else happy.

Sometimes we develop ways of protecting ourselves that made sense earlier in life but no longer serve us in the same way.

Therapy can provide an opportunity to understand these patterns and explore different ways of responding.

Attachment, Trauma and Relationships

Attachment experiences and trauma can be closely connected.

Experiences of inconsistency, rejection, neglect, loss, abuse or feeling unsafe can influence how we experience ourselves and our relationships.

Attachment-based therapy can help you explore these experiences while developing greater emotional awareness, self-compassion and security in your relationships.

The focus is not simply on what happened in childhood. It is also on how those experiences may be showing up in your life today.

Can Attachment Patterns Change?

Yes.

Our attachment patterns are influenced by experience, which means new experiences can also create change.

A safe and supportive therapeutic relationship can provide an opportunity to experience connection differently. Over time, therapy can help you develop greater awareness of your needs, communicate more effectively, establish healthier boundaries and feel more secure in your relationships.

You are not destined to repeat the patterns you learned earlier in life.

Is Attachment-Based Therapy Right for You?

Attachment-based therapy may be helpful if you:

  • struggle with trust or intimacy

  • experience relationship anxiety

  • fear rejection or abandonment

  • have difficulty expressing your needs

  • find yourself repeating unhealthy relationship patterns

  • struggle with boundaries

  • become overwhelmed during conflict

  • tend to withdraw or shut down emotionally

  • want to understand how childhood experiences affect your relationships

  • want to develop a more secure relationship with yourself and others

At Guided Path Counselling, we can explore your experiences together and determine what therapeutic approach best fits your needs. Attachment-based work may also be integrated with trauma therapy, couples therapy, EMDR, Somatic Experiencing and other approaches.

Understanding where your patterns came from can be the beginning of creating something different.

Attachment-based therapy is available in St. Albert and online across Alberta.
