Creating Healthier, More Honest Relationships
Relationships can bring out the best in us—and sometimes the parts of ourselves we struggle with most.
You may find yourself having the same arguments, becoming defensive, shutting down, criticizing, people-pleasing or struggling to communicate what you really need.
Relational Life Therapy (RLT) helps you understand the patterns you bring into relationships and develop healthier ways of connecting with yourself and others.
At Guided Path Counselling, RLT provides a practical and compassionate framework for creating more honest, respectful and connected relationships.
What Is Relational Life Therapy?
Relational Life Therapy was developed by therapist Terry Real. RLT focuses on the ways we relate to ourselves and other people, particularly the patterns that can create disconnection and conflict.
RLT recognizes that many of us learned ways of relating from our families, childhood experiences and past relationships.
These patterns may have helped us cope at one point in our lives, but they may no longer be serving us.
RLT helps you become more aware of these patterns and take responsibility for the part you play in your relationships—without turning that responsibility into shame or blame.
Moving Beyond the Same Old Patterns
You might recognize yourself as someone who:
-
becomes defensive when confronted
-
avoids difficult conversations
-
tries to keep everyone happy
-
becomes controlling or critical
-
shuts down during conflict
-
struggles to set boundaries
-
has difficulty expressing needs
-
feels resentful because you give more than you receive
-
repeatedly finds yourself in similar relationship patterns
RLT helps bring these patterns into awareness so you can begin making different choices.
The goal isn't to determine who is the problem.
It is to understand what each person is bringing to the relationship and what needs to change.
Relationships Require Both Connection & Responsibility
Healthy relationships require more than love.
They require the ability to communicate honestly, maintain boundaries, listen, repair after conflict and take responsibility for our own behaviour.
RLT encourages people to move away from blame and toward greater relational responsibility.
This can create room for more honesty, respect, connection and intimacy.
Is Relational Life Therapy Right for You?
RLT may be helpful if you:
-
feel stuck in recurring relationship patterns
-
struggle with communication or conflict
-
have difficulty setting boundaries
-
feel disconnected from your partner
-
want to improve your relationship skills
-
struggle with people-pleasing or resentment
-
want to understand how your past affects your relationships
-
are looking for a practical approach to relationship change
RLT can be used in couples therapy and can also be helpful for individuals who want to develop healthier relationships.
At Guided Path Counselling, we may integrate RLT with attachment-based therapy, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and other approaches depending on your needs.
You cannot always change the people around you—but you can change the way you show up in your relationships.
Relational Life Therapy is available in St. Albert and online across Alberta.
