Understanding Your Nervous System and Your Responses

Have you ever wondered why you can know that you are safe, but your body doesn't feel safe?

You may become anxious, overwhelmed, shut down or disconnected without fully understanding why. You may find yourself reacting strongly to situations that seem manageable to other people.

These responses are not simply a matter of willpower.

Your nervous system is constantly taking in information about safety, threat and connection—and influencing how you respond.

At Guided Path Counselling, a polyvagal-informed approach helps us understand these responses with curiosity and compassion.

What Is a Polyvagal-Informed Approach?

Polyvagal-informed therapy draws on the work of Dr. Stephen Porges and Polyvagal Theory to help us understand the relationship between the nervous system, emotions, behaviour and our experiences of safety and connection.

Your nervous system is always responding to what is happening around you and within you.

When you perceive threat, your body may move into a state of protection. You might experience anxiety, anger, restlessness, hypervigilance or the urge to escape.

At other times, you may shut down, withdraw, feel numb or disconnected.

These responses are part of your body's protective system.

Understanding them can help you move from “What's wrong with me?” toward “What is my nervous system responding to?”

What Does Nervous System Regulation Mean?

Regulation does not mean feeling calm all the time.

Life naturally brings stress, uncertainty, conflict and difficult emotions.

The goal is to develop greater awareness of your nervous system and increase your ability to recognize what you are experiencing, respond to it and return to a greater sense of balance.

Therapy may help you notice:

  • when you are becoming overwhelmed

  • what triggers your stress responses

  • how your body communicates distress

  • what helps you feel grounded and safe

  • how relationships affect your nervous system

  • how to respond rather than automatically react

Polyvagal-Informed Therapy and Trauma

Trauma can have a lasting impact on the nervous system.

After overwhelming experiences, you may find yourself constantly watching for danger, struggling to relax or feeling disconnected from your body and emotions.

A polyvagal-informed approach can help you understand these responses without judging them.

Rather than seeing your reactions as weaknesses or failures, we can begin to understand them as protective responses that developed for a reason.

This perspective can create greater self-compassion and provide a foundation for change.

Connection and Relationships

Safety isn't only an internal experience.

Our relationships can influence how safe, connected and regulated we feel.

This is particularly important when working with attachment and relationship concerns. Learning to recognize your own nervous-system responses—and understanding the responses of others—can create opportunities for healthier communication and connection.

At Guided Path, we consider the relationship between your nervous system, your history, your relationships and the environment around you.
