Finding Your Way Back to Each Other
Most couples don't really want to fight with each other.
Underneath the arguments, frustration and disconnection are often deeper needs: “Do I matter to you?” “Can I count on you?” “Are you there for me?”
Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) helps couples understand the patterns that develop between them and create greater emotional connection, security and responsiveness.
At Guided Path Counselling, we use EFCT to help couples move beyond the same repetitive arguments and begin understanding what is happening underneath the conflict.
What Is Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy?
Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy developed by Dr. Sue Johnson.
EFCT is grounded in attachment theory and focuses on the emotional bond between partners.
Rather than asking, “Who is right?”, we begin to explore: “What is happening between you?”
Couples often become caught in cycles where one partner pursues connection while the other withdraws, or where both partners become defensive and disconnected.
These patterns can become so familiar that couples begin to see each other as the problem.
EFCT helps couples recognize the cycle as the problem—and learn to respond to one another differently.
Moving From Conflict to Connection
Underneath anger there may be hurt.
Underneath criticism there may be fear.
Underneath withdrawal there may be a longing to feel safe, loved or understood.
EFCT helps couples slow these interactions down and explore the emotions and attachment needs underneath them.
Through this process, couples can develop new ways of communicating, responding and reconnecting.
What Can EFCT Help With?
EFCT may help couples experiencing:
-
frequent conflict or repeated arguments
-
emotional disconnection
-
difficulty communicating
-
trust issues
-
intimacy concerns
-
recurring relationship patterns
-
relationship distress after an affair or betrayal
-
attachment injuries
-
difficulty feeling understood or supported
-
major life transitions
-
uncertainty about the future of the relationship
Couples do not have to wait until their relationship is in crisis to seek therapy.
Sometimes therapy can help you strengthen your relationship before patterns become deeply entrenched.
Is Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy Right for Us?
If you keep having the same argument without feeling any closer to a solution, there may be a cycle underneath the conflict that needs to be understood.
EFCT provides a framework for understanding that cycle and creating new experiences of connection and emotional safety.
At Guided Path Counselling, we believe couples therapy is not about choosing sides. It is about understanding the relationship, the patterns that have developed and what each person needs to feel more secure and connected.
The goal isn't simply to stop fighting. It's to help you find your way back to each other.
Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy is available in St. Albert and online across Alberta.
